Oh, the things you learn...

Workin' with kids keeps you forever young, I've decided.  It opens the door for creativity to ooze...and ooze it must for it is essential for survival.  In the last month, I've discovered amazing things.

When you celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday, you absolutely must make green eggs and ham.  At least green eggs.  Don't add green food coloring, though, just blue.  And even though you use six carton of eggs, you still don't need a lot of food coloring.  Oh, and tell the kids that you aren't trying to poison them with green eggs.

If you mix 2.5 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, and 1 cup of water, you can have a nice batch of salt dough.  But if you want enough for 25 kids to make pitchers to remember the story of Elijah and the widow and how absolutely awesome God is to be Jehovah-Jireh, you'll need 7.5 cups of flour, 3 cups of salt, and 3 cups of water...and a lot of space to mix it up.  And to be prepared to wear the flour, and if you lick your fingers after making your pitcher, you're gonna need some water for your poor tongue.

And, to really illustrate the point of sin in the heart, I highly recommend open heart surgery where you pull out a black heart covered in green slime.  The green slime is the best part cause you can cause it to stretch and pull all over the place while you're talking about lying, stealing, fighting, hating, gossiping, coveting, and pridefuling...mainly what your heart has in it when you choose your way instead of God's way.  And it's really easy to make too...just elmer's glue, liquid starch, and food coloring.

The absolute best, though, was last nights romping through the inflatables at the local party center.   Six huge blow-up places to jump around in, race through, and slide down...if that doesn't keep you young, you're pretty much hopeless.  Or maybe it's the huge grin on the faces of children who are just now learning how to play...that's pretty amazing too.

ding, ding, ding went the bell...

There are sometimes in life, that you must just get on your horse and head into the sunrise....

It's a time to broaden your horizons and meet new friends...

Sometimes, all we need is to open our eyes to take in the adventures and wonders that God intends for us to experience every day of our life in Christ....

And of course, meeting any new challenge that comes along the way is quite necessary...

Overall, the archway to adventure isn't limited to a time or place.  The invitation to explore within the boundaries of God's will is an open invitation to a life that is never boring.  One just has to wonder if we content ourselves far too easily with our easy accessibility to have needs met.  Wonder what would happen if we really lived as "Christ, who is our life..."

out of the mouth of a child

Today at Good News Club, I learned a valuable lesson.  I think it was what God had been trying to put on my heart all week, I was just too stubborn to listen. Perhaps it's also why I haven't posted in a while.  Just too proud.
For the last several weeks I've been thinking a lot about what the Christian life is supposed to look like in my culture. What does it really mean to follow Jesus?  It's been a good time for thought.  Much serious contemplation too.  I don't have any answers, but God does.
In our small group time today, we were talking about persecution.  It's an interesting thing to discuss with second and third graders living in the suburbs of America.  Very interesting. My goal was to tell them about Christians living in persecuted countries.  I asked them how many of them go to church every week.  A few raised their hands.  Then, in their usual fashion, they began discussing the question in all it's terms and possible answers, popping up with comments at random.
It was a typical day in my small group.
Then, one of the boys said, "No, wait! I go to church every Friday"
To which I (wondering if he might go to mass on Fridays) sought to clarify and asked, "You go to church on Fridays? Where?"
He gave me the oddest look like that was the silliest question I could have asked and answered me plainly, "Here!"
Humbled.

the core issue

Once upon a time there was a little girl who had a wicked heart.  Then an amazing God came and told her she had a wicked heart.  And she knew it was true.  So, when the amazing God told her that He would take her wicked heart and give her a clean one, she nodded her head and said, "Yes, please."  And He did.  Isn't that incredible?  Then, the amazing, wonderful, and very big God told her that she could tell others about Him.  And she said, "Yes, please!!"  So, because He is who He is, He sent her to a group of children who needed to learn about Him.  Then, like a pitcher, He filled her up so she could be poured out to these children.  But these children already had heard about G od.  They knew the stories about Him from other people.  They had been learning all their lives about Him.  So, what was the little girl to do?  She asked the amazing, wonderful, very big, extremely powerful, and uber creative God what she should do.  And He told her a good way to teach about how He sees the heart, and asked her if she wanted to demonstrate that.  And she said, "Yes!! Please!!!"  So, because God was what He was, He faithfully told her how.
Then she took an apple and polished it to look oh so pretty, and the she inserted it with brown dye.  She thought about it a lot while she did it.  Cause she didn't know how the dye was effecting the apple.  It was still pretty on the outside.  She wondered what it looked like on the inside.  And sometimes, we don't know the effects either.

But then it was the time that the amazing, wonderful, very big, extremely powerful, uber creative, and incredibly personal God had given the little girl to tell her story to the children.  And the children were excited about the apple. The little girl thought about it afterwards and wondered if she did a good job telling.  Then, the best thing happened.  The amazing, wonderful, very big, extremely powerful, uber creative, incredibly personal and extravagantly loving God told her He was at work and that she could trust Him.  And she said, "Yes. Please."

A few of my favorite things...

What a fun night....

This time of year...specifically around the 24th of January...I like to celebrate.  It just seems like a good time of the year to celebrate.  I think everyone should have one day of the year that they set aside to celebrate...

So this year, I chose today to celebrate....even though it's not the 24th.  And why not celebrate with some of my favorite things?

Like....amazing people who will do crazy stuff with me like play ultimate Frisbee out in the dark, freezing cold backyard with a Frisbee that doesn't fly straight?

Or play Scrabble?  (seriously, that's an incredible game)

Or act out stories?  (This one had a king, a knight, a cowardly knight, an old woman, and a giant! )

Let's not forget the ice cream..... they made a boat sundae for me...complete with mast and sail.

My guest book f
or the party was a picture that everybody painted...it turned out remarkably well.

And there's not time to tell of the crazy laughter, the difficult
puzzle, the roaring fire, the yummy hot cider, the scary story, the exhilarating ride on the sled pulled by my brothers or the funny comments made by all....

It's all part of living in the grand adventure with God...and seeing His beauty through His people.  I am blessed...and full of wonder.
